Coordinate Geometry Calculator
Solve coordinate geometry problems: find line equations, parallel/perpendicular lines, point-to-line distance, and triangle area from coordinates.
Formula & Reference
| Variable | Symbol | Formula | Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coordinate Geometry Calculator | — | y - y₁ = m(x - x₁) (point-slope) | equation/units |
Step-by-Step Examples
Through (1,2) and (4,8).
- m=(8−2)/(4−1)=2
- b=2−2(1)=0
- y=2x
Vertices (0,0), (4,0), (2,3).
- Area=½|0(0−3)+4(3−0)+2(0−0)|
- =½|0+12+0|=6
Line slope m=3. Perpendicular slope?
- Perpendicular m=-1/3
- Product of slopes=-1 for perpendicular lines
Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Vertical lines x=a have undefined slope (division by zero in dy/dx). They cannot be written as y=mx+b.
If line 1 has slope m, perpendicular has slope −1/m. Exception: vertical and horizontal lines are perpendicular.
The shoelace formula can give negative area if points are listed clockwise. Take absolute value for the actual area.
