Common Mistakes to Avoid
The bail bondsman's premium (typically 10%) is a non-refundable fee for the service, regardless of whether charges are dropped. Many families pay $5,000-$10,000 and are shocked when it's not returned after dismissal.
A bail bond co-signer (indemnitor) is personally liable if the defendant fails to appear. The bondsman can sue the co-signer for the full bail amount and seize any pledged collateral.
In some states, you can post 10% of bail directly to the court (not a bondsman) and get most of it back. Some states allow property bonds. Public defenders can request bail reduction hearings.
