Semen Analysis Reference Calculator
Compare semen analysis results against the WHO 2021 sixth edition reference limits, and calculate total sperm number and total motile count.

| Semen Analysis Reference Calculator | — | Total sperm number = volume × concentration; TMSC = total × progressive motility | reference comparison |
Step-by-Step Examples
Volume 3.5 mL, concentration 55 M/mL, progressive motility 48%, morphology 8%.
- Total sperm = 3.5 × 55 = 192.5 million
- Every parameter above its lower reference limit
- TMSC = 192.5 × 0.48 = 92.4 million
Volume 2.8 mL, concentration 9 M/mL, progressive motility 32%, morphology 5%.
- Total sperm = 2.8 × 9 = 25.2 million
- Concentration 9 below the 16 M/mL limit
- Total sperm 25.2 below the 39 million limit
- Motility and morphology within limits
Volume 1.0 mL, concentration 60 M/mL, progressive motility 40%.
- Volume 1.0 below the 1.4 mL limit
- Total sperm = 1.0 × 60 = 60 million, above the 39 M limit
- Low volume with normal concentration can suggest collection issues or obstruction
Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
WHO limits are the 5th centile of men whose partners conceived within twelve months. Men below them can father children, and men above them can have difficulty.
Semen parameters fluctuate substantially with abstinence period, recent illness, fever, and stress. Two or more samples weeks apart are needed.
WHO protocol specifies two to seven days of abstinence. Shorter or much longer intervals shift volume and concentration meaningfully.
