AMH predicts response to ovarian stimulation. It is a poor predictor of natural conception — studies in women without infertility find low AMH does not meaningfully reduce the chance of conceiving naturally.

Combined hormonal contraception can lower measured AMH by roughly a fifth to a quarter. A result taken while on the pill may understate true reserve.

What does AMH measure?
Anti-Müllerian hormone is produced by small growing follicles, so its level correlates with the size of the remaining ovarian follicle pool — ovarian reserve.
Does low AMH mean I cannot get pregnant?
No. AMH predicts response to fertility treatment, not natural fertility. Research in women without known infertility finds low AMH does not substantially reduce natural conception chances.
Does AMH measure egg quality?
No. It estimates quantity only. Egg quality is driven mainly by age, and no blood test currently measures it directly.
Does the contraceptive pill affect AMH?
Yes — combined hormonal contraception typically lowers measured AMH, so ideally testing is done off it or the result interpreted with that in mind.
Why is AMH high in PCOS?
PCOS involves an increased number of small antral follicles, each producing AMH, which raises the total measured level — often two to three times typical values.
