Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Subtract the area of outlets, window frames, and range hood openings. Add those tiles back in as waste (those cuts still use tiles).
Standard subway tile is installed with a 1/3 offset (brick pattern). This increases waste vs straight-stacked patterns. Use 15% waste, not 10%, for offset patterns.
Backsplash tiles crack and chip over the years. Order 10-15% extra and keep leftover boxes labeled. If tiles are discontinued, matching exactly later is nearly impossible.
