Why do thin films show colors?
Different wavelengths have constructive interference at different thicknesses. A range of thicknesses (like a soap bubble) shows different colors across its surface.
What is destructive thin film interference used for?
Antireflection (AR) coatings: chosen thickness and refractive index cause destructive interference of reflected light, reducing surface reflectance from ~4% to <0.1%.
What is the pi phase shift?
When light reflects from a medium with higher refractive index, it gets a phase shift of pi (180 degrees). This inverts constructive/destructive conditions relative to no-shift case.
How thick is an AR coating?
Typically 100-140 nm (quarter wavelength of green light divided by refractive index of coating material, typically MgF2 n=1.38 or TiO2 n=2.35).
Why do CDs show rainbow colors?
CD spiral tracks (~1.6 um spacing) act as a diffraction grating, not thin film interference. But thin film coatings on CDs do contribute additional colors.
