Worked Examples

Example 1: Normal BP: 120/80
MAP = 80 + 40/3
Result: 93 mmHg — normal
Normal organ perfusion
Example 2: Shock: BP 90/60
MAP = 60 + 30/3
Result: 70 mmHg — borderline
MAP <65 = hypotension requiring intervention

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is MAP preferred to systolic pressure?
MAP represents the average pressure driving organ perfusion over a complete cardiac cycle. Critical organs (kidneys, brain) need MAP ≥65 mmHg for adequate perfusion.
What MAP is needed for organ perfusion?
MAP ≥65 mmHg: general threshold. Brain: cerebral perfusion pressure = MAP − ICP; needs CPP ≥60. Kidneys: need MAP ≥70-75 to maintain GFR. ICU target: MAP ≥65 mmHg in septic shock.
