Frequently Asked Questions
What GCS requires intubation?
GCS ≤8 is the classic threshold: 'GCS 8, intubate.' However, clinical judgment prevails — a rapidly deteriorating patient at GCS 12 may need intubation, while a stable GCS 7 post-seizure may not.
GCS limitations?
GCS cannot be applied normally to intubated patients (no verbal score), under sedation, or with facial trauma. Modified GCS and the FOUR Score were developed to address these limitations.
