Used for drug dosing in obese patients
Example 2: 160cm female, 45kg
BMI=17.6, IBW=54kg
Result: Underweight
% IBW = 83% — nutritional support consideration
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ideal body weight used for?
Drug dosing (aminoglycosides, vancomycin, chemotherapy), mechanical ventilator tidal volume (6 ml/kg IBW), and nutritional assessment. Do not use actual weight in obese patients for these calculations.
BMI limitations in clinical practice?
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, or body composition. Muscular athletes may be classified as overweight. Elderly may have normal BMI despite sarcopenia (muscle loss). Waist circumference adds important information.
