Understanding Tip and Bill-Split Arithmetic
A tip calculation is a percentage problem followed, when needed, by equal division among people. Convert the tip percentage to a decimal rate, multiply by the bill amount, add the tip to obtain the total, and divide by the number of people if the total is being split equally.
For an 18% tip, the rate is 0.18. A $50 bill therefore gives a $9 tip because 50×0.18=9. The total is $59. If two people share the total equally, each share is $29.50. The percentage should be applied to whichever bill amount the problem specifies; mathematics alone does not decide whether a real-world tip is based on a pre-tax or post-tax amount.
Currency introduces rounding. Exact arithmetic can produce fractions of a cent, so a displayed monetary amount is typically rounded to two decimal places. For group splits, a rounded equal share may not add back to the rounded total exactly because cents are indivisible. In that case, one or more people can adjust by a cent so that the collected shares equal the bill total.
The number of people is a count and should be a positive whole number. If people are paying different proportions, equal division is not the correct model; calculate each person's share according to the agreed allocation before applying or distributing the tip.
A quick estimate is useful before accepting a result. A 20% tip is one-fifth of the bill, so an 18% result should be slightly less than that benchmark. Estimation catches misplaced decimal points and accidental use of 18 instead of 0.18.
