A useful method is to decompose a decimal number into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, convert each part, and concatenate the results. For 1,944, the parts are 1000 + 900 + 40 + 4, which become M + CM + XL + IV = MCMXLIV.

Standard classroom and software conventions usually restrict ordinary Roman numerals to 1 through 3999 because there is no single universally adopted plain-text notation for larger values. Classical inscriptions also show historical variations, so not every inscription follows the modern subtractive rules. Roman numerals have no standard symbol for zero and are not designed for efficient arithmetic.

When checking a conversion, read from left to right and verify that each place-value group contributes the intended amount. This catches forms that have the right symbols but combine them in a nonstandard order.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ IV vs IIII

Standard notation uses IV=4. Some clocks use IIII, but IV is correct.

❌ No zero in Roman numerals
