Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Using diameter instead of radius

Circle area uses radius (r), not diameter (d). Radius = diameter ÷ 2. Using diameter gives 4× the correct area!

❌ Units confusion

Area is always squared units. If dimensions are in feet, area is in square feet (ft²).

❌ Using diameter in πr²

The circle formula uses radius. Divide diameter by 2 before squaring.

❌ Forgetting square units

Area is two-dimensional, so units must be squared, such as cm² or m².

Scaling gives another check. If a square side doubles from 3 to 6, area changes from 9 to 36, a factor of four. If a circle radius triples, area grows by a factor of nine. These square-law relationships are useful for detecting whether a length was accidentally used instead of a squared length.

For composite figures, split the region into familiar non-overlapping pieces, add their areas, and subtract holes or cutouts. The calculator's simple shape modes are building blocks for that process. Always use perpendicular height for triangle and trapezoid formulas; a slanted side is not automatically the height.

In real measurements, area also depends on precision. If a length is only known to the nearest centimeter, carrying ten decimal places in the final area suggests more certainty than the inputs support.
