Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ferritin is an acute phase reactant that rises with any inflammation, infection, liver disease, or malignancy. A normal ferritin does not exclude iron deficiency when inflammation is present.
Serum iron fluctuates considerably through the day and after iron-containing meals or supplements. Morning fasting samples give the most consistent results.
A single high transferrin saturation warrants repeat fasting testing and, if persistently elevated, genetic testing — not an immediate diagnosis.
