Step-by-Step Examples
68-year-old, no difficulty with any item, no falls.
- All five items score 0
- Total = 0
- Below the threshold of 4
79-year-old, some difficulty lifting, some difficulty rising from a chair, a lot of difficulty with stairs, two falls.
- Strength → 1, walking → 0
- Rising → 1, stairs → 2
- Falls 1–3 → 1
- Total = 5
85-year-old, a lot of difficulty across all items, five falls in the past year.
- Strength → 2, walking → 2
- Rising → 2, stairs → 2
- Falls 4 or more → 2
- Total = 10

Common Mistakes to Avoid
It is a screening instrument with high specificity but relatively low sensitivity. Confirming sarcopenia requires objective strength and muscle mass measurement.
Because sensitivity is modest, early or moderate sarcopenia can screen negative. Clinical concern should still prompt objective testing.
Age-related muscle loss is substantially modifiable. Resistance training and adequate protein intake produce measurable gains even in people over 80.
