| Calcium Intake Calculator | — | RDA varies by age and sex: 1,000–1,300 mg/day for most adults | mg/day |
Step-by-Step Examples
35-year-old man, 2 dairy servings and 1 fortified serving daily.
- RDA for adults 19–50: 1,000 mg/day
- Estimated: 2 × 300 + 1 × 150 + 250 = 1,000 mg
- Meets the recommendation
58-year-old woman, 1 dairy serving daily.
- RDA for women 51–70: 1,200 mg/day
- Estimated: 300 + 250 = 550 mg
- Shortfall of roughly 650 mg/day
15-year-old, 3 dairy servings daily.
- RDA for ages 9–18: 1,300 mg/day — the highest of any group
- Estimated: 3 × 300 + 250 = 1,150 mg
- Slightly below the adolescent RDA

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Intakes above the upper limit have been associated with kidney stones and, in some studies, cardiovascular concerns. Meeting the RDA is the goal, not exceeding it.
Spinach is high in calcium but its oxalate content makes that calcium poorly absorbed. Kale, broccoli, and fortified foods provide far more usable calcium per serving.
Calcium absorption is more efficient at doses of around 500 mg or less, so splitting supplementation across the day works better than one large dose.
