How much water should you drink per day?

Can you drink too much water?
Yes. Hyponatremia (water intoxication) occurs when sodium levels drop too low from excessive water intake. Rare for average people but possible for endurance athletes who drink large amounts of plain water without electrolytes.
What about coffee and tea?
Caffeinated drinks are mildly diuretic but still contribute to fluid intake. Coffee and tea count toward your daily water intake. The diuretic effect is small; you don't need to drink extra water to compensate.
Why drink more in hot weather?
You sweat more in heat, losing both water and electrolytes. Your body needs to replenish fluid lost to maintain blood volume, regulate temperature, and maintain organ function.
Signs of dehydration?
Thirst (you're already mildly dehydrated when you feel thirsty), dark urine, headache, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, and decreased urine output. Chronic mild dehydration affects concentration and mood.
