Study Hours Calculator: Daily Exam Study Plan

Estimate how many hours to study each day from the amount of material you need to cover, the days remaining, and your study efficiency.

How the Study Hours Calculator Works

First estimate how many focused hours it would take to cover the material once. The calculator then adds a review allowance based on your efficiency rating and divides the adjusted total by the days remaining. Use 3 when you are unsure. This is a planning estimate, so increase the result for unfamiliar subjects, practice exams, or missed study days.

Adjusted hours = material hours × [1 + (5 − efficiency) × 0.20]
Study hours per day = adjusted hours ÷ days until exam

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Cramming the night before

Distributed practice over weeks outperforms cramming. Spaced repetition is far more effective for long-term retention.

❌ Passive vs active studying

Highlighting and re-reading are the least effective methods. Active recall, practice tests, and teaching others work best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most effective study methods?

Active recall (flashcards, practice tests), spaced repetition, teaching others, and interleaving subjects. Re-reading is the least effective.

Pomodoro technique?

25 minutes of focused study, 5-minute break, repeat 4 times, then take a 15-30 minute break. Maintains focus and prevents burnout.

Study hours needed for exams?

Professional exams (CPA, bar): 200-400+ hours. College finals: 2-4 hours per exam credit. Certifications: 40-100 hours.
