Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Bigger is NOT better for HVAC. Oversized units short-cycle (turn on and off rapidly), which reduces dehumidification in summer, creates temperature swings, and wears out the equipment faster.
A 2,000 sq ft home in Florida needs nearly double the cooling capacity of the same home in Seattle. Climate zone is the biggest variable in HVAC sizing.
A poorly insulated home may need 20-30% more capacity. An Energy Star or tightly sealed home may need 10-20% less. Insulation quality significantly changes the required size.
