Step-by-Step Examples
120 ft long, 8-ft post spacing, 6-ft height, 3 rails.
- Posts = 120/8 + 1 = 16 posts
- Rails = 15 sections x 3 = 45 rails (8-ft 2x4)
- Pickets = 120 x 12/3.5 = 411 pickets
- Concrete = 16 x 2 = 32 bags (80-lb)
200 ft, 10-ft spacing, 2 rails.
- Posts = 200/10 + 1 = 21 posts
- Rails = 20 sections x 2 = 40 rails
- No pickets for split rail
150 ft, 10-ft post spacing.
- Posts = 150/10 + 1 = 16 posts

Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Post count = sections + 1. In an L-shaped or U-shaped fence, add a post at each corner and gate opening. Many calculators miss these added posts.
Each gate requires 2 posts set in concrete (gate posts), hinges, and a latch. Gate posts should be one size larger than line posts (use 4x6 for a 4x4 post fence) to handle the extra load.
For 6-ft privacy fences: 6-8 ft max spacing. For 4-ft fences: 6-8 ft. Wider spacing causes fence panels to sag and flex in wind. Rail spans over 8 ft significantly reduce fence rigidity.
