Step-by-Step Examples
15x12 ft room, 2 doors (3 ft each), baseboard.
- Perimeter = (15+12)x2 = 54 ft
- Minus doors: 54 - 6 = 48 ft
- + 10% waste = 52.8 -> 53 LF
- Pieces: 7 x 8-ft or 5 x 12-ft
20x16 ft room, 1 door.
- Perimeter = 72 ft - 3 ft door = 69 ft
- + 15% waste (crown is tricky) = 79.35 -> 80 LF

Real-World Applications
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Walk-in closets have their own perimeter of baseboard. Add each closet separately: (closet length + closet width) x 2 minus the door opening.
Crown molding requires compound miter cuts at corners. The spring angle makes it tricky; add 15-20% waste, not just 10%. First-timers often need more.
Buy 12-ft pieces if any room wall is over 8 ft long (most are). Having a joint in the middle of a long wall is less attractive. Longer pieces = fewer joints.
